5 Ways To Relieve Stress

De-stress after a long day spent at a desk with longtime Bodyism Yogi Anna Karides's top tips

Recent figures have revealed that stress is at an all-time high. In fact, a recent study found that 85% of UK adults experience work-related stress, which account for more than half of all working days lost due to ill health in the UK.

Our bodies do everything to support us, in return we owe it the right nutritional and physiological support. Stress and stress related illness, tiredness and unhappiness tends to be a struggle for just about everyone. When not  managed, this can cause detrimental effects to your physical and mental health.

Raised cortisol levels, a common result of stress on the body, can affect every system in your body and cause adrenal burnout, digestive issues, ageing, anxiety, chronic fatigue, common cold, hormone imbalance, IBS, autoimmune disorders, thyroid conditions and weight loss resistance.

We asked Bodyism Yoga Specialist, Anna Karides, for some proven ways to relieve stress during and after your day at work.

1. Get Upside Down

Feeling low on energy or sleepy after a day at your desk? Get upside down. Practice your handstand against the wall and let the blood flow to your brain. If you want to try something a little less challenging, opt for a shoulder stand instead. Even easier? Get your feet up on the wall for 10-15 minutes a day, you can do this even when you’re lying in bed with your feet up against the headboard. Inversions are a quick way to increase circulation and help create a lively perspective.

2. Open Up

Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Chest openers are the rescue for physiological and psychological benefits. By lifting your heart, moving your shoulders back and lengthening the front and back of your body, you decrease back pain and shoulder tightness, and improve your spirits. The opening of the chest symbolises opening the heart, growing in compassion and connection to others and thus decreasing isolation and depression.

3. Move It

Getting some fresh air and going for a quick stroll is a really simple and easy way to get perspective on things. Get your daily dose of Vitamin D and steps by going outside.

4. Take a Breather

Feeling stressed and overwhelmed? Take a few deeps breaths! It is so easy to forget to really breathe. Close your eyes. Inhale and exhale deeply through your nose. Count your inhales and exhales, making them equal. Inhale for 1, 2, 3, Exhale for 1, 2, 3 & repeat. Controlled breathing can also lower blood pressure, promote feelings of calm and relaxation, and help you de-stress.

5. Oil Infusion

Essential oils are the queens to help with all stress related issues. Lavender, lemongrass, ylang ylang and rose are amongst by favourites. Put a couple of drops onto a scarf or cotton pad and just tuck it into a piece of clothing or in a safe pocket in your bag. The scent of the oils will help support you through stressful times throughout the day and help bring you a sense of calm. Feel a sense of calm every time you walk in to Bodyism Notting Hill?
